Do deeper and x-ray searches on Google to find unadvertised jobs There is a blog post from Lifehacker that is making the rounds on Facebook.  The advice is simple and definitely something you should already know.   You can read the original post here: Find Unadvertised Job Openings with a Clever Google Search The gist of the post is to use Google (or whatever search engine you use) smarter.  Heres the formula they suggest: Lets break this formula down.  If you are already really advanced on x-ray search ideas, spend time on Glen Catheys Boolean Black Belt site, where he goes deeper on this than Ill ever go. FIRST, the site:__________ tells Google to restrict the search results to a certain site.  You arent searching the entire web, you are searching the content from one website.  In this example you are saying to only return results from taleo.net. Next, the intitle tag is used to narrow down the search results. This is optional, but once you figure out how to use it, and figure out how your target website you are searching on uses it, it might come in really handy.  You must understand that intitle is not referring to an actual job title, rather to some html code heres what the html looks see the title there?  Dont mix up the the concept of a job title and the title in the html code, although Im guessing most of the time a site like taleo will put the actual job title in the html title. In taleo you can see the title in two places neither of them are on the website.  The first is in the tab (ever wonder where that text came from?): The other place to see what the title tag has is the source code, which will look like this: Next, the search criteria.  This is not optional.  You can do all kinds of cool things to really narrow your search, including using quotes, parenthesis, + or signs, etc.  See how I have two search criteria, both in quotes, and the results are showing hits with both of those phrases? The post at Lifehacker suggests that you will find unadvertised jobs.  That is such a tricky word I think if it is posted online it is advertised.  This concept of unadvertised jobs is NOT the hidden job market.  But these search tricks give you a good way to find things you arent finding right now on a normal Indeed search. Play around with this on LinkedIn.  Lets do one more simple example, borrowing from Glen Catheys tutorials. Like I said, he goes deeper than Ill ever go.  A good place to start is this primer he wrote in December. Note in the image below, we are searching only on LinkedIn, we want to have pub or in in the URL, and the keyword is president.  The second result shows up because in is in the URL of an article (click on it to see the article, then look at the URL, youll see -in- in the ULR). If you click the image above it will take you to the google search page with that query.  How would you show ONLY presidents, and not vice presidents?  Easy put a -vice in the search query, which says but dont show me anything with vice in it.  Try it for yourself Playing around with this I found it to be a bit quirky. June 5, 2017 â€" With wedding season underway, a survey by tech-buying site Decluttr.com shows that men are four times more likely than women to use their smartphones during a wedding. The site, which gives customers cash for unwanted tech items, as well as CDs, DVDs and video games surveyed 1,000 U.S. smartphone owners age 18 and up to find out just how addicted they were to their phones. While most people overall wouldn’t look at their phone during a wedding, your man is more likely be found head down, checking his smartphone. Wedding? What wedding? Other highlights from the survey include the following. •        Family Focused: Overall, smartphone owners look at their phones more when they’re with friends than during family time, but men do so more during either occasion: 67% during family time and 63% while spending time with friends. Multiple respondents also stated that they make a conscious effort to put their phone aside to focus on quality time with family. •        Distracted Dating: 67% of males, in comparison to just 13% of females, admitting to checking their devices whilst on a romantic night out. •        Sobering Sacrifices: Alcohol and video games were the top two things that men and women would give up before handing over their phones, but one of the biggest difference is giving up sex. Though not at the top of the list, twice as many women than men would rather give up sex than give up their phone. Sorry, fellas. Maybe it’s the distracted dating. •        Serious Streamers: 83% of men (in comparison to just 17% of women) say the worst part about not having their trusted smartphone with them is not being able to watch videos or stream movies and TV shows. •        Postponed Parting: Even if their phone had a cracked screen, 52% of men would put off getting it fixed because they can’t be without their phones. Liam Howley, marketing director at Decluttr, comments: “While smartphones can be an extremely useful tool for information and entertainment, they can also lead to users missing out on what’s actually going on around them. Our survey suggests that men may be zoning out important occasions such as weddings in favor of checking their phones or falling short of paying attention to their family members, friends or even their date.” However, when it comes to taking a break from their phones, 43% of men say a digital detox would be beneficial. The same goes for women, with 56% stating a detox would be good. Several respondents said that they use vacations as the perfect occasion to take a break from their phones. With Summer fast approaching, maybe it’s time for a break during a break. Decluttr’s tips for weaning yourself off your cell phone: 1.       Gradually leave bigger gaps between checking your messages or social media posts. If you normally check every 15 minutes, make it once an hour, if every hour, leave it for 2-3 hours etc. Build up to only checking two or three times a day. You can let friends/work colleagues know in advance that you’re going to be doing this and that if there’s an emergency where they need an urgent response from you, they can call you. 2.       If you think you’ll get bored without your phone to turn to, think of ways you can fill your time instead. Read a book or listen to music when you’re travelling on public transport or waiting around. You could also make better use of your time learning a new skill or doing some exercise. 3.       In social situations, only use your phone if you’re sharing something with the people you’re with â€" looking up information or posting a social media post that includes your friends. 4.       Don’t check your phone when you’re on a date, or with someone you’re meant to be spending one to one time with. Focus on whoever you are with and give them your full attention. 5.       Be fully present and start to appreciate being in the ‘here and now’. How to Meet People in a Room Full of Strangers - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What do you do when you find yourself in a room full of strangers and dont know anyone? Maybe youre attending your first networking event. Maybe your spouse brought you to their office Christmas party. Maybe youre attending your first ever industry convention and are at the networking party. Whatever the reason, people often have trouble meeting someone new at a time like this. People dont like being in these situations, because they dont know what to say, theyre worried about being seen as too aggressive, or looking like they only want to make contacts to help themselves. How do you get beyond that and meet someone? First, get over yourself: Think youre the only shy person who has ever existed in history? Not a chance. Id be willing to bet that nearly everyone else in the room feels the exact same way. They just happened to already know someone. But at one point or another, everyone was in their first ever large group of people. They survived it, so can you. So suck it up, walk up to someone new, and Introduce yourself, ask what they do, or what brought them there, then listen: Its not a great conversation starter, but until you learn some better ones, kick off with the easiest. Ask them what they do, or if youre at a social event, ask them what brought them there. Then listen to the answer. Let them talk for a while (believe it or not, the more you listen, the more youll be considered a great conversationalist). Find out what interests them and what they hope to find, either at the gathering or at another time during their week. If you know someone who can help them, offer to connect them: A good networker does not try to see if they can meet people to benefit themselves, or how many cards they can pass out. Instead, they try to help as many people as they can. If they can do that, their generosity will be returned to them in greater amounts. So as you talk to someone, and they mention a problem theyre having or something they would like to accomplish, and you know someone who can help them achieve it, offer to connect them. If that other person happens to be there in the room, introduce them right away. If you want to cement your place in this persons mind as someone whos worth knowing, connecting them with the people who can help them achieve their goals will do it. Dont monopolize all their time: Youre not going to meet your new BFF here, so dont try. However, you will meet some great people who could end up having a significant impact on your life. But that doesnt happen all at once. Its a long-term relationship that gets developed over the months and years. Once you meet someone and make a good connection, arrange to meet for coffee or lunch later on. Thats where the foundation of the relationship will be built, not in a room full of people. Networking with people isnt hard. Its a matter of being confident, listening to other people, and helping them achieve their goals and solve their problems. If you can master that, youll find that meeting new people is one of the easiest things to do, even for the most introverted of us. 7 highly effective ways to promote yourself on social media - Debut Since the dawn of the internet, humankind has been looking for a way to wave our personal interests under peoples noses without them saying Ewww, gross! and wheeling away in abject horror.  At long last, social media has provided us with that opportunity. But two or three times a week, even two or three times a month will cover that for you. Rather than flood peoples timelines with your projects all the time, post at the best times when people will be looking. Lunchtimes and early evening are the classics. And for the real professionals amongst you, tools like Buffer and Tweetdeck help you to schedule all your social posts in advance. Tidy. 2. Get personal Our generation has to consume so much more marketing than any thats ever preceded it. And guess what the more marketing were exposed to, the more we hate it. If you want your personal brand to be worth a damn, then youve gotta do better than soulless hey!-click-this-link-that-doesnt benefit-you-at-all posts. Social media is for telling your friends stories and people will respond better if you put some of your own personality into it.  If youre funny, make your post funny. If theres a crazy story behind it, tell it. Friends come to your profile for you, so putting a little more of you into the work you share is crucial. 3. Be creative Again, you have to do the most you can to get noticed in the sea of things people see on their News Feeds. So youve gotta offer something a little different. If you can add an image, sound clip or video to anything you do, I definitely recommend doing it. Text posts tend to get skimmed over for the most part in the ethereal world of social media. At least with a bit of movement or sound, what you post is more likely to be remembered on its way into the abyss. 4. Take pride I have a nasty habit of self-deprecating whenever I share posts to my social media. Saying Check out this thing that I did if you want or dont its probably trash anyway ahaha doesnt work. As much as you dont want to be a d*ck, it just isnt gonna get your hard work the attention it deserves. If you dont have pride in what you do then no-one else will either. Check this thing out, I worked really hard on it commands way more respect. If you think that blog post youve written is the best thing youve written in a while, say that. After all, if you dont blow your own horn every once in a while, there wont be any music. 5. Chill with the hashtags #You #dont #need #a #billion #of #these #to #get #views #on #a #post. In fact, it pretty much does the opposite, turning people off what you have to say. Time was, you had to put a paragraph of hashtags on an Instagram post to make sure everyone would know how complex and multi-faceted that pic of your lunch was. But those days are gone. Pick a few quality, relevant hashtags to go with your post and nothing more. 6. Interact with people People need to feel like theyre actually getting something out of interacting with your posts. If theyre engaged enough by your content to comment on it, make sure to reply. Not only are you showing your audience that their opinion matters, engaging in debate and receiving constructive criticism will make better at whatever you do. If any of your friends do similar things, be sure to check out, comment on and share their work too. You never know when they might return the favour. 7. Live your life Surprisingly, this is something a lot people forget to do. Its too tempting to use you social media channels to pimp out everything that youve ever worked on, but youve gotta use it to live your life too. Dont forget to break up the stream of self-promotion as many fun posts as youre comfortable with. Go out, see things, express opinions, hang with friends and take pictures. Is LinkedIn a Good Place to Search for a Career Linked In recently published their list of the 25 hottest professional skills of 2014. The list is based on what skills got people hired and kept recruiters searching this past year. Its a very good source for how to choose a career because its based on reality the largest social network for business professionals. Linked In is a good data source Based on personal experience, I know that LinkedIn is a popular spot for recruiters to find and solicit candidates. When recruiters need to source candidates for corporate jobs then recruiters will inevitably start using LinkedIn like a search engine for finding people. LinkedIn is growing and has 330 million members thats a very good figure for pulling reliable statistics from. A high percentage of those 330 million members keep their profiles up-to-date since it is where hiring managers look to research candidates further. It is also the way to attract new connections for networking. Use caution when using Linked In data Linked In doesnt include every job out there. They focus on corporate world jobs and are an everything for everyone type of site that doesnt represent all niches. Linked In is only able to report on who is there and what they are doing on their site. Dont look at this list as a statement of the volume of jobs out there, its just how much demand there is for those jobs. Linked In is a personal branding tool where many people may adjust their keywords and job titles in order to get found. That is influenced by articles that are written and industry buzz words. For example, one of our clients is in marketing and positioned himself as a campaign manager, digital marketer or online marketer at various points last year. Hot does not mean long-term. Compare the 2014 list to the 2013 list of hottest skills on LinkedIn. Skills that show up hot one year are often not on the list the next year. Where do you think those jobs are 5 years out? 10 years? How to choose a career LinkedIn isnt trying to be a definitive source for choosing a career. So dont use it as such. Use it as another data point in your research. There are lots of sites to include in your research and lots of people to talk to: Use glassdoor.com to get a feel for titles that are in use and how many there are. Talk to a recruiter about the niche they focus on and the trends he/she have seen from companies and in skill sets. Look at industry trends for shifts that will create hot jobs not just for next year but also for the next decade. Account for your geography because global or even country statistics may not be applicable if you have a specific city you want to live in. Network for informational interviews especially with hiring managers who have been working for two or three decades. Theyll be able to tell you about trends theyve seen and what jobs or skills have stayed consistent through the years. At the end of the day, its tough to place your bet on a single job or career. The rapid pace of technology and the development of a global workforce is going to mean that adaptability will be a critical skill for staying in demand. If you can keep your eye on the trends that affect your industry and geography and continue to evolve your skill set you will be able to keep your skills in demand for a long time.
